Urban Legends: Who Is Pishtaco? (not Fish Tacos)

Pishtaco is a native American mythology originating in the Andes region of South America particularly in Peru and Bolivia.

As per the legend, a Pishtaco refers to an evil humanoid creature, often depicted as a foreigner and often as a white man seeking out natives to kill and / or exploit them. Pishtaco is after the ‘fat’ of his victims and often devises ingenious ways to separate the fat from his targets and sell them or devour them in cannibalistic rituals.

The natives have had a long preoccupation with body fat, and infact they also have a deity for fat: ‘Viracocha’.

This legend dates all the way back to the Hispanic wars in South America and has in recent times been rehashed due to large corporations dealing on indigenously owned lands.

There have been several incidents of reported crimes such as gang violence in which perpetrators have invoked the Pishtaco by severing the body parts of their victims (very gruesome indeed!) but with long time lapse and loss of many historic records the origins of the exact person or group of people that his urban myth would refer to is uncertain.
