Find out the legal drinking age in your state

Across the country the legal minimum age to consume alcoholic beverages varies from 18 – 25. For example, in Maharashtra to consume light beer one must be above the age of 18. This is also the case in states like Goa, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Sikkim and Puducherry.

 

Multiple states have legal age at 21 including Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Chattisgarh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh.

 

Kerala has an age limit of 23 which was changed from 21 a few years back. Maharashtra, Chandigarh, Meghalaya and Punjab have a legal drinking age of 25 years.

 

Finally states like Gujarat and Bihar have a total ban on sale and consumption of alcohol.

 

Internationally, USA has imposed an age limit of 21, Japan permits alcohol consumption at age 20 while in Canada it is 19 years old. The norm for most countries is 18 years while some European countries like Germany allow ‘soft / mild’ alcohol consumption from the age of 14 if accompanied by an adult.
