Hurricane Beryl Wreaks Havoc Across Caribbean

Hurricane Beryl, the first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic season, has become a significant weather event due to its intensity and early formation. As of early July 2024, Beryl has weakened slightly to a Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of about 120 mph, as it approaches the Caribbean. The storm is expected to bring life-threatening conditions, including a storm surge that could raise water levels by 6 to 9 feet and heavy rainfall of 3 to 6 inches in Barbados and the Windward Islands.

Earlier, Beryl reached Category 4 status, making it the earliest hurricane to do so in the Atlantic Basin in June. It also made landfall on Carriacou Island in Grenada as a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 150 mph.

Residents in affected areas, including Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, the Grenadines, Grenada, and Tobago, have been advised to prepare for potentially catastrophic damage. Preparations have included boarding up windows, stockpiling supplies, and securing property.
