Women's Day: The underdiagnosis of endometriosis in India
Endometriosis is a chronic gynaecological condition characterised by the presence of endometrial-like tissue outside the uterus. It is a public health concern that impacts approximately 247 million women worldwide, with around 42 million affected in India alone.
However, in India, this condition often remains underdiagnosed and misunderstood, leading to significant challenges in managing its symptoms effectively. Many women may dismiss their symptoms as normal menstrual discomfort, leading to delays in seeking medical attention.
UNDERSTANDING ENDOMETRIOSIS
Endometriosis occurs when tissue that looks similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, commonly on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the tissues lining the pelvis.
This abnormal tissue growth can cause inflammation, scarring, and the formation of painful lesions. While the exact cause of endometriosis remains unclear, factors such as hormonal imbalances, genetic predisposition, and immune system dysfunction are believed to play a role in its development.
